Certain recyclable materials can be boxed for pickup by UW Recycling.

What materials are accepted?

Non-confidential eMedia.
Hardbound, softbound books, journals, magazines, etc.
- Hardbound books and softbound books should be separated.
Printer/copier cartridges and components
- UW Recycling requires a minimum of 6 boxes of large toner cartridges or 1 storage box (Bankers box) full of small cartridges to be eligible for this service.

Packing the boxes

Consolidate different types of materials into separate boxes.
Label each box with the contents (e.g. “Hardbound books for recycling”).

This service is typically free.

For large volumes (over 35 boxes), excessive weight, or difficult access, a fee may be applied – typically our standard driver hourly rate. Don’t forget that hourly rates include how long it takes for our crew to come out, pick it up, and take it to where it needs to go.

Check before you toss

Is my item UW property?

If your unwanted item was purchased with University funds, regardless of condition, it must be transferred to UW Surplus.

Is my item confidential?

Check the UW Records Retention schedules before disposing of any record (e.g. documents, photographs, slides, audiotapes, videotapes, CDs/DVDs, etc.). If the records retention schedule says, “shred or delete” for your item, it’s considered confidential. Follow the confidential documents or confidential eMedia procedures as needed.
