We support the promotion of campus events and activities while maintaining a beautiful and well kept campus grounds.

Service Options

Sandwich boards
  • Groups can have up to 10 sandwich boards on display for up to a two week period.
  • Groups may provide their own boards or borrow from Facilities Services.
  • Requests and artwork must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the display date.
  • All artwork must be approved by FS and the Grounds Advisory Committee.
  • Groups will need to provide copies of their artwork to be placed on the sandwich board.
  • Contact us if your group wishes to have artwork designed or printed by our sign shop.
  • Boards may not be placed in locations that impact pedestrian traffic or vehicle visibility and must include a 5’ clearance around any board in an open paved area.
  • Boards may not be chained or cable locked to University property.
  • Boards must be between 24” and 36” tall, and between 20” and 30” wide.

Cost

If you are borrowing boards please include your budget number on the request form. There is no fee for this service, or for board rentals. However, if equipment is returned damaged or goes missing, or there is damage from sign placement, we will bill you $40 per board for replacement boards.

Lawn signs
  • Groups can have up to 10 signs on display for up to two weeks.
  • All artwork must be approved by FS and the Grounds Advisory Committee.
  • Groups will need to provide copies of their lawn sign artwork. Facilities Services will provide the permit sticker.
  • Contact us if your group wishes to have artwork designed or printed by our sign shop.
  • Lawn Signs may not be placed in locations that will impact pedestrian traffic or vehicle visibility. There must be 5’ of clearance around any sign in an open paved area.
  • Lawn Signs should be placed in mulched areas to avoid being removed for facilities operations such as mowing and edging.
  • Lawn Signs may not be chained or cable locked to University property (such as trees, bollards, street signs or lamp posts etc.)

There is no fee for this service. If sign placement causes damage to campus, or FS prints materials for you, you will be charged.

How early should I request?

Banners
  • Banners may be hung on buildings to promote various events.
  • Requests and artwork must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the display date.
  • Requests will be responded to within two weeks of the submittal.
  • All artwork must be approved by the building coordinator and Facilities Services.
  • Groups will need to provide FS with the banners so they may be installed at the designated location.
  • Banners may only be installed and removed by FS staff.
  • Banners on road overpasses are prohibited by Seattle City Law.
  • Banners may be displayed up to 30 days.
  • No commercial advertising is allowed
  • Banners should be easy to read from the street, we recommend single-color backgrounds.
  • Designs should be simple/uncomplicated so that they are easy to read or understand from a distance.

Sizes and material recommendations:

Banners must fit within the attachment standards of the facility of which it will be attached. Banners must be made of durable fabric, some examples of this include:

  • Vinyl - 18oz, Screen Printed with UV Outdoor Grade Ink
  • Polyester - Printed with Dye Sublimation Ink 2/9/11
  • Nylon – Sewn & Appliquéd
  • Nylon – Screen Printed

Banners must have corner grommets and a grommet every 48” on the top and bottom for securing. Most buildings fit 10’ x 3’ or 12’ x 3’ banners, Mary Gates Hall and Odegaard use 30’ x 3’ banners, Kane Hall fits 30’ x 4’.

Cost

Materials and labor for banner installation will be charged to the sponsoring department. One banner installation and removal typically costs $350 per building, or $750 for Red Square Stacks.

Eligibility

Signs must be affiliated with UW and sponsored by a department or student group.

Pole banners

Pole banners hang along the University’s main roadways. These banners may only be used by campus units promoting campus events and activities that they’re sponsoring. Banners must meet our standards and be approved by the Campus Signage Committee. Our department installs and removes all banners.

The artwork (in exact color) of the proposed banner must be submitted with the request for approval form. The exact location(s) the number of banners and installation and removal dates must also be included with the request.

Pole banner standards:

  • Must be 30” x 60” and made of durable fabric
  • Background must be one color
  • Banners must have top and bottom hems to slip over arms
  • Banners must have top and bottom corner grommets to secure to pole
  • No commercial advertising is allowed
  • Banners should be easy to read from street and printed on both sides
  • Designs should be simple or obvious, ensuring they’re easy to read or understand
  • Banners may not be displayed for more than 30 days

Material recommendations:

  • Vinyl - 18oz, screen printed with UV outdoor grade ink
  • Polyester - printed with dye sublimation ink
  • Nylon – sewn and appliqued
  • Nylon – screen printed

Cost

A budget number is required in the request form for this service. The fees for this service are graduated based on the number of banners:

  • One banner installation/removal costs $250.00, this includes mobilization of two people and lift truck
  • $75 for each additional banner
  • $300 additional if City of Seattle street use permits are required

How early should I request?

The request form must be submitted for approval at least 30 days prior to the requested installation date. Your request will be reviewed by the Campus Signage Committee and a decision made within two weeks.
