All fluorescent lamps removed during a capital project must be recycled appropriately. UW Recycling coordinates the collection of lamps with the UW’s contracted vendor. Fluorescent lamps are collected in specialized containers commonly referred to as “drums.”

If you have lamps to recycle that are not associated with a capital project,  consult the lamp disposal procedures page.

1. Request Drum Delivery

Request the drums at least two weeks before the desired date of removal for the lamps. Drums will arrive 5-10 days after the request is submitted. A signature is required upon delivery.

2. Fill the Drums

Label the drums as “Waste Lamps” with the date you start using (not the date they were delivered). This information can be handwritten on the drum or you can print this label and tape it to the drum.

3. Request Drum Pickup

Once the project is complete or the drums are filled, submit another request and UW Recycling will schedule the pickup with the vendor. Pickup will be scheduled 5-10 days after the request is submitted. A signature is required upon pickup.
