Custodial

The Building Services Department (BSD) provides custodial services in about 200 academic, administrative and research buildings on the UW campus. Our custodial team is divided into seven geographical work areas (requires NetID login to view). Please click below for our routine and premium services.

Custodial Services is responsible for cleaning the interiors of campus buildings. The following are considered routine tasks:

  • Building entry doors: locking, unlocking
  • Restrooms: disinfecting, replenishing supplies, repairing dispensers
  • Trash, recycling and compost removal: custodians collect waste from green bagits and public-area containers
    • Flattened cardboard: custodians will collect up to six pieces from each workstation
    • Customers can place a request for removal of larger volumes of recyclables
  • Chalkboards and whiteboards: cleaning, replenishing chalk or markers in classrooms and auditoriums
  • Floors: scrubbing, sweeping, mopping and vacuuming
  • Floor mats: clean interior and exterior mats
  • Stairwells and elevators: dusting, wiping, sweeping and vacuuming
  • Doors, glass, walls, tabletops and podiums: surface cleaning and dusting
  • Dusting*: uncluttered cabinet tops, window sills, banisters, etc.
    • *After receiving the request, the local custodial manager or supervisor will determine if staff can safely do the work. Requests may be considered premium work due to height, location or other limitations.

  • Sweeping/mopping floors and vacuuming: once a week
  • Dusting*: uncluttered cabinet tops, windowsills, etc.

The following premium services can be requested by a building coordinator or department administrator outside of or in addition to regularly scheduled service:

  • Carpet cleaning: removing dirt, allergens and stains from carpets (also available for upholstery and fabric walls/partitions)
  • Events: extra cleaning and waste removal
  • Floor work: buffing, stripping and refinishing
  • Special cleaning: kitchen appliances, furniture, offices, labs (after EH&S approval) and major cleaning projects
