RecycleMania starts this month at the University of Washington. For the eighth year, the UW will be participating in the friendly recycling competition among colleges and university recycling programs.
During RecycleMania, each college and university reports the amount of recycling and waste diverted from the landfill. In past years, the UW has surpassed Pac-12 competitors with the highest diversion rate. Each week, the waste and recycling amounts will be totaled to see who is on top. At the end of the 8-week period, the data will be analyzed to see which colleges and universities have the highest waste diversion. RecycleMania 2020 runs from Feb. 3 to March 28 this year.
As part of RecycleMania, UW Recycling is organizing events and activities to promote waste reduction.
The first event, “Get Caught Green-Handed” took place Feb. 12 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Local Point Café at Lander Hall. UW Recycling partnered with Students Expressing Environmental Dedication (SEED) to promote waste reduction habits during lunch. When a participant sorted their waste correctly, they were caught green-handed and rewarded for being sustainable. Small prizes were given out for those who participate.
On March 12 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., there will be a clothing repair workshop at Alder Commons. RepairCycle, a mobile mending service, will instruct and assist participants in how to mend their clothes. Each year, millions of tons of textiles end up in landfills. By mending clothing rather than throwing it away, attendees can help reduce their textile waste.
UW Recycling will also host weekly challenges and deals on its social media accounts for RecycleMania. Several highlights include the “Where in the Dub” scavenger hunt and a “Mug Shot” photo contest. The “Where in the Dub” scavenger hunt will be a series of Instagram posts that users have to guess the locations of. During the “Mug Shot” contest, participants who post a photo of themselves using their reusable mug or tumbler will be entered into a raffle. Starting Feb.17, there will also be a coupon for The Bean Basket, the Associated Students of the University of Washington Student Food Cooperative (ASUWSFC)’s bulk store.
Winners for Recyclemania will be announced in April. For the most up-to-date information on the competition and the activities, follow UW Recycling on our Instagram (@UWRecycling).
